Kelly Morgan was recently promoted to Supervisor Child Care Assistance Program Supervisor, a program in the Child Care & Family Resource Division. Congratulations, Kelly!
Now here’s the story.
Kelly began work with Catholic Community Service just after she turned 16 years of age. That’s right, just 16!
Kelly was hired originally over spring break during her sophmore year in high school to help the accounts payable section. She was so efficient in her work that she was offered a part-time intern position as an administrative assistant (while still attending high school). Initially, she was responsible for filing paper work for the accounting staff. In short time, however, she became responsible for various data entry, company purchasing, filing, and helping her supervisor with bank deposits and petty cash reconciliations.
In 2003 Kelly’s job was phased out, and she was transferred to the Child Care Assistance Program as an eligibility technician. As early as 2006, she was offered the Supervisor position. At the time, she felt as though she was not ready for the job; however, she took on the role of “Interim Program Supervisor” during recruitment for the job.
Ed Sasser was hired for the job. As Kelly tells it, “Ed took a program drowning in work, treading water, barely able to stay above the surface, and turned the program around.” He also very subtly began mentoring Kelly for the job, providing her with the knowledge and confidence to take it on.
Just a few months ago, with Ed’s retirement, Kelly was promoted to CCAP Supervisor. Though a bit anxious about taking on a supervisory role for the first time, Kelly notes that someone once told her that, “if you don’t feel a little bit scared or a little out of your element, then you have no challenges to face and overcome, and life is all about overcoming challenges.”
Kelly says that the most gratifying part of her job is ending the day knowing that she and her staff have been able to help keep a parent in the workforce because he/she can afford child care for his/her child(ren). She says that, “There is nothing more rewarding in this position than knowing we have helped lift the weight off the shoulders of a parent struggling to afford child care on top of other monthly expenses.”
In her new role, Kelly hopes to train and guide her staff in a way that each of their clients is served to the best of their ability. She wants to set and meet new goals to improve the program and to make eligible families not being currently served aware of the program so that they have access to quality, affordable child care. She adds that she “feels so lucky to have three wonderful ladies working right alongside me to make this program the best that it can be.”
